Eastern Province is the largest, the most populous and the least densely populated of Rwanda's five provinces. It was created in early January 2006 as part of a government decentralization program that re-organized the country's local government structures.

The Western Province of Rwanda
Western Province is one of Rwanda's five provinces. It was created in early January 2006 as part of a government decentralization program that re-organized the country's local government structures. Western Province comprises the former provinces of Cyangugu, Gisenyi, Kibuye, and a small portion of Ruhengeri.

The Volcanoes National Park including Mount Muhabura (4127 m), Mount Gahinga (3474 m), Mount Sabyinyo (3669 m) and Mount Bisoke (3711 m) is home to mountain gorillas but also golden monkeys, spotted hyena, buffaloes, elephants, black-fronted duiker, and bushbuck.
